A Message from our Communications and Marketing Department

Please know that Springside Chestnut Hill Academy places tremendous value in our communication between home and school. The primary method of sharing information with parents about important events and programs is our weekly Virtual Mailbag (VMB). Please be sure to refer to this electronic newsletter, sent on Friday afternoons, for all-school information (found on the landing page) as well as information specific to your daughter's grade level and slideshows of school life (found on the Lower School page).

Adding Negative Numbers and Partial Differences

"Negative numbers are another source of frustration to many budding mathematicians and scientists, and not addressing this issue can cause consistent errors throughout a child's learning in maths. To tackle this problem a clear and consistent approach is required. As always, understanding needs to be backed up with solid practice as for most students maths concepts need to be reinforced in order for them to be retained."

Please see the attached link for a video about adding negative numbers.

Partial Differences:
This is similar to the Partial Sums Addition Method but girls will be using their number lines located in their homework folders to help them use negative numbers when solving subtraction equations. This will take some practice and patience. Please encourage your daughters to do what they can but not to get frustrated. This is a new skill and we will have lots of opportunities in the classroom to focus on this new concept.
