In addition to the
Everyday Math curriculum, we have the opportunity to work with Sally Johnson
once a cycle during math enrichment. The purpose of math enrichment is to
introduce students to problems that are different, in structure and content,
than they are regularly exposed to in math class each day. These problems
require the use of previously learned material, while at the same time
stretching students’ understanding into new concepts. The overarching goals of
math enrichment are to help students become more nimble with numbers, more
aware of geometric shapes and their relationships, and increase their overall
confidence in mathematical problem solving. The whole class looks forward to
our math enrichment work and is ready for the challenge it provides.
Today Mrs. Johnson taught the girls several wonderful card games that she will share directions to so that girls can work on their mental math skills over the winter break.
