Dear Parents,
Over the next two weeks, October 25 through November 6, we will be giving each girl in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade a series of fact assessments. These assessments will be 90 seconds (two minutes in 2nd grade) in duration and have 25 problems each. In general, one assessment will be given each day, unless the situation dictates otherwise. Completed assessments will be sent home for you to see, sign and return to school the following day. We will scaffold the assessments during the two weeks to help individualize the process for each student, and help them to become comfortable and confident with the facts they absolutely need to know at this time. In each grade, the assessments will begin with the basic facts the girls should know based on the previous academic year. Once your daughter is secure with those facts, the next level will be given to include current work.

The teachers in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade focus on facts practice as part of their curriculum, and each time the girls sit and take a unit assessment there are timed fact assessments built in. However, we feel that this added work over the next two weeks is essential to help us identify any issues and work to get everyone confident and comfortable with basic facts. We hope that all families can look at math facts in the same manor as you do reading. Practicing a little each day goes a long way! Revisiting facts for five minutes, a few times a week throughout the year (including summers!), will be invaluable, and really help to solidify the mental computation and estimation skills they are exposed to each day in math.
